A new poll shows 51% of Europeans view Trump as an enemy, while Poles offer a unique perspective.
European Perception of Trump
A new survey by French magazine “Le Grand Continent” reveals that 51% of respondents in seven European countries view US President Donald Trump as an “enemy of Europe.” The poll was conducted between January 13-19, 2026, following Trump’s statements about wanting to take control of Greenland.
Spain and Denmark had the highest percentages at 58%, followed by Belgium (56%), France (55%), Germany (53%), and Italy (52%), reflecting Trump’s strained relations after his ambitions regarding Greenland.
Polish Response Stands Out
Poland presents a unique case in the poll. Only 28% of Polish respondents view Trump as an “enemy of Europe,” and just 17% see him as a “friend.” The majority (48%) of Polish respondents don’t categorize Trump as either, compared to 39% across all seven countries surveyed.
Europe’s Policy Uncertainty
The poll indicates widespread uncertainty among Europeans about how to respond to Trump’s policies. While 46% favor EU “opposition” to the US government, 44% support “compromise,” and only 10% want to align more closely with the US position.
Regarding defense, nearly three-quarters of respondents believe the EU should rely solely on itself rather than US support, with only about one-fifth believing Europe can still count on the US.
