A military drone crashed and detonated on a cornfield in Osiny, Lubelskie, sending fragments and shattered glass across nearby buildings. Polish prosecutors have identified explosive materials in the wreckage, while defense officials are investigating whether the event was a sabotage operation.
Explosion at Osiny
At approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday, a military drone fell onto a cornfield in the village of Osiny, Lublin County, and detonated. The blast produced a crater roughly 5–6 m in diameter and a depth of about 50 cm, and shattered the windows of neighboring structures.
Prosecutor’s Confirmation of Explosive Materials
District prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz stated that the recovered drone fragments suggest the presence of explosive substances. While the exact type, quantity, and composition of these materials remain unknown, the prosecutor confirmed a very high probability—bordering on certainty—that an explosion occurred. An additional weapons‑systems expert is expected to arrive to determine the precise nature of the device and its surroundings.
Investigations by Defense and Security Forces
Following preliminary analysis of radar‑tracking data, the Operational Command of Armed Forces confirmed that the drone did not violate Polish airspace from either Ukraine or Belarus. Helicopters and unmanned aircraft were deployed to survey the entire area as part of thorough searches conducted by police, military gendarmerie, Territorial Defence forces, and operational units.
Potential Sabotage Considered
Chief of the Ministry of National Defence, Władysław‑Kosiniak‑Kamysz, emphasized that sabotage cannot be ruled out. Current inquiries include the possibility of a Russian drone, an illicit smuggling drone, or sabotage carried out on Polish territory. Earlier assessments by the prosecutor’s office tentatively excluded a civilian drone as the source of the incident.
