Poland’s health ministry has confirmed that COVID‑19 vaccinations with the newly approved LP.8.1 variant‑specific vaccine will resume at the end of September, underscoring the World Health Organization’s emphasis on the critical role of boosters amid evolving virus variants.
Poland’s Health Ministry on COVID‑19 Vaccinations
In line with the European Medicines Agency’s recommendations for the 2025/2026 epidemic season, the Ministry of Health states that LP.8.1 variant‑specific COVID‑19 vaccines should be used. These vaccines are currently undergoing registration and are not yet available. The ministry has informed the Polish Press Agency that vaccine deliveries are awaited and the immunisation effort will restart in late September.
The World Health Organization reiterates that “vaccinations remain a key intervention to prevent severe disease and deaths from COVID‑19, especially among high‑risk groups.”
WHO Report on SARS‑CoV‑2 Variants
SARS‑CoV‑2 continues to evolve. Between January and May 2025, the global dynamics of virus variants shifted. Initially, XEC was the most widespread variant monitored by WHO worldwide, followed by KP.3.1.1. In February, XEC incidence fell while LP.8.1 increased, becoming the most frequently detected variant by mid‑March. From mid‑April, LP.8.1 cases plateaued as the NB.1.8.1 variant became increasingly prevalent.
