In a Tuesday evening radio interview with Todd Sterns, President Trump declared that he would personally join police officers patrolling Washington Street and that he intends to work alongside law enforcement and the military. “I will join the police and the military tonight,” he said. “We will do the task,” he added, praising the National Guard for their exceptional work. Details of the President’s presence on Washington Street remain unknown at this time.

On August 11, President Trump announced that he would place the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington under direct federal control, partially withdrawing it from local authorities. He also dispatched National Guard units to the capital. This decision followed several days of ordered increased federal presence in the city.

The president emphasized that he is undertaking “historic measures to combat crime and homelessness.” Democratic city officials said that according to statistics, safety has improved significantly. Washington now has 800 local police officers. An additional 1,200 officers were sent from Republican states—Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia—supporting the larger effort.
