Representatives of family victimized by Mieszko R. request thorough examination of psychiatric findings in UW campus murder case.
Family Statement on Psychiatric Evaluation
Representatives of the family victimized by Mieszko R. informed Gazeta.pl that “the family is aware of the conclusions from expert opinions indicating the perpetrator’s insanity at the time of the act and their justification.” “For the family of the deceased, the priority is that the final determinations in this matter are completely certain, categorical, and indisputable. This is necessary for the sense of justice and public security,” they stated.
“In connection with the above, the content of the opinion is being analyzed with the participation of independent specialists in the fields of psychiatry and psychology. If any ambiguities arise in this context, as legal representatives, we will take procedural steps to clarify all doubts, so that the conclusions regarding the perpetrator’s responsibility are based on unquestionable grounds,” the statement reads. The representatives emphasize that the victim’s family requests respect for their privacy.
Psychiatric Opinion on UW Murder
Mieszko R. is suspected of murdering a University of Warsaw employee and desecrating her body, which occurred on May 7 on the UW campus, as well as attempting to murder a University Security employee. On Monday (January 9), the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw informed the portal Gazeta.pl that, according to its findings, Mieszko R. was insane at the time of the incident.
“Experts determined that at the time of committing the act, he was acting in a state of psychosis caused by psychotic decompensation in the course of a diagnosed mental disorder,” says Alicja Szelągowska, prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, in an interview with Gazeta.pl.
Legal Proceedings
Due to the determined insanity, a request will be submitted to the court to discontinue the proceedings and refer the man to a closed psychiatric facility. However, according to the experts, there is a high probability that Mieszko R. could commit a similar act in the future. They therefore proposed that if he were ever released from the psychiatric facility, the court should consider placing him in the National Center for Preventing Dissocial Behavior in Gostynin.
