Poland receives 43.7 billion euros from EU’s SAFE loan program for 139 defense projects, raising questions about repayment.
EU’s SAFE Loan Program Established
The EU’s SAFE loan program was established in May 2025. It assumes that the EU will take out 150 billion euros in low-interest loans. The funds will be used to support equipment purchases and expand defense capabilities.
Poland’s Defense Funding
Poland was allocated nearly 30 percent of the allocated funds, or 43.7 billion euros (about 190 billion złoty). Our country is to finance 139 different defense projects, and EU funds to Poland will be channeled through the Financial Instrument for Increasing Security SAFE (FIZB SAFE).
Repayment Concerns
The loans taken out will have to be repaid within 45 years. Questions arise about how Poland’s Ministry of National Defense will manage this significant debt burden.
