Poland’s weather patterns shift dramatically this week as warmer, unstable air mass brings first spring thunderstorms and rising temperatures.
Unstable Air Mass and First “Spring” Thunderstorms
Recently, the weather has been relatively calm. A winter atmosphere with snow and frost dominated, although there was less of it in the south. The beginning of the week will bring changes in the weather, making it more dynamic.
Over the weekend, an atmospheric front moved through Poland, bringing significant precipitation. Behind it, on Monday, a warmer air mass will begin to flow in, which we will notice on thermometers – it will be warmer! On the west of the country, local thermometers will show even 8-11°C.
Weather Pattern Changes
The air mass that will flow to us will be warmer and unstable. This means a risk of the first spring thunderstorms. Why spring, since it’s February? Although we still have to wait for the calendar spring, we will welcome meteorological spring in less than a week – on March 1st.
Monday’s weather will be like a rollercoaster: there will be passing rain showers, which may be accompanied by the first electrical discharges. Between the rains, clearings may appear. In colder regions, something that resembles hail but differs slightly may fall – snow pellets.
Polish Storm Hunters Forecast
Monday’s thunderstorms will be associated with the inflow of an air mass characterized by instability (a feature that somewhat conditions the development of thunderstorms). These will be typical intramass thunderstorms – the same mechanism that on hot summer afternoons leads to the development of thunderstorms. The process is standard – warm air rises, condenses, and Cumulonimbus storm clouds develop.
According to the Polish Storm Hunters’ forecast, dangerous phenomena that accompany summer thunderstorms should not appear during potential thunderstorm cells, but one should be aware of the possibility of gusts of wind up to 80 km/h and local falls of the mentioned snow pellets or very small hail (with a diameter of about 0.5-1 cm).
Thunderstorm Conditions
The possibility of thunderstorms will persist until the evening hours. It’s worth remembering that a thunderstorm is a local phenomenon, so despite favorable conditions, it does not appear in the entire country.
Although the thunderstorms will not carry so-called concurrent hazards, even during the weakest thunderstorms, the danger of being struck by lightning is present.
