Milan Tram Derailment Kills Pedestrians

A tram derailed in central Milan on Friday afternoon, killing a pedestrian and a passenger after crashing into a building.

Pedestrian and Tram Passenger Dead

The accident occurred on Friday, February 27, around 4 PM. According to the Italian press agency ANSA, the tram derailed in central Milan and crashed into a building, crushing several pedestrians on the street.

One pedestrian and one tram passenger died in the crash. The remaining tram passengers were injured. Milan’s mayor, cited by the newspaper “Il Sole 24Ore,” stated that the deceased were a 60-year-old Italian and an immigrant about whom no additional information was provided.

Video Shows Tram at High Speed

Italian media published a video showing the tram traveling at high speed when it derailed. It was also determined that the driver skipped a stop before the accident occurred. The reason for not stopping is currently unknown.

Investigation Into Manslaughter

The mayor of Milan emphasized that the tram was a new generation vehicle and was driven by an experienced operator. The newspaper “la Repubblica” reported that the prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into involuntary manslaughter. The tram driver will be questioned soon.
