Putin and Trump Discuss Ukraine and Iran, Kremlin Confirms Readiness for Regular Contacts

Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a one-hour phone call on March 9, discussing Ukraine and Iran, with both declaring readiness for regular contacts.

Kremlin Confirms Phone Call

On Monday, March 9, a Kremlin advisor confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, the discussion focused on Iran and Ukraine.

The Kremlin stated the call lasted approximately one hour and was constructive. It reported Trump reiterated his interest in a swift end to the war in Ukraine, while Putin presented solutions he believed could accelerate the conclusion of the conflict with Iran.

Focus on Iran and Ukraine

Russian state agency RIA Novosti reported that Putin called for resolving disputes between Washington and Tehran through diplomatic means. The leaders also discussed the situation in Venezuela, particularly in the context of the global oil market.

Both leaders declared their readiness for regular contacts, as stated in the Kremlin’s official communication following the discussion.

Trump’s Comments on Iran’s Leader

Earlier on the same day, Trump told the “New York Post” he was “not satisfied” with the selection of Iran’s new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Speaking from his golf club in Florida, he declined to reveal his plans regarding the new Iranian leader.

When asked if he supports Khamenei’s removal, Trump responded, “I won’t say. I am not satisfied with him.”

Reports on Potential Actions Against Iran

The “Wall Street Journal” reported on Monday that Trump had informed advisors he might support the killing of Mojtaba Khamenei if he fails to comply with U.S. demands, such as ending Iran’s nuclear program.

Citing current and former officials, the newspaper noted that Israel is likely planning an operation to overthrow the new Iranian leader. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, when questioned by CNN if Khamenei is a target, replied, “You must wait and see.”

U.S. officials perceive the current Iranian leader as a hardline successor chosen by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Sources expect Khamenei will not abandon Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons or negotiate a conflict resolution favorable to the U.S. The White House did not comment on the “Wall Street Journal” report.
