Warsaw Police Arrest Bike Theft Suspect After Threatening Guard

Police in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district have arrested a 37-year-old man suspected of multiple bike thefts, including one where he threatened a security guard.

Attempted Theft and Threats

A 37-year-old man attempting to steal a bike at the entrance to buildings on Anna German Street was arrested by Żoliborz police. The perpetrator threatened a security guard with death and violated his bodily integrity. Tools for cutting bike locks were found on the suspect.

Arrest Details

On Wednesday after 5 PM, police were called to Anna German Street, where according to reports, a man was trying to unfasten a bike chain securing a bicycle at a building entrance. One security guard tried to stop him while another called the police. During the intervention, the detained man threatened the security guard, saying he had a knife and would come back to kill him when police released him.

Officers who arrived immediately after the call detained the 37-year-old. Metal cutting shears and various keys were found on the man. The suspect was placed in a police cell.

Previous Thefts

Further operational investigations showed that the same man had committed two bike thefts in mid-November from buildings on Rydygiera and Mścisławska Streets, causing losses of nearly 5,000 Polish złoty.

Legal Charges

The collected evidence allowed five charges to be brought against the detained man – including three for property theft committed within five years after serving at least six months in prison for similar offenses ruled by the District Court for Warsaw-Mokotów. He was also charged with bodily harm to a security guard and making criminal threats of deprivation of life that caused fear of their fulfillment. The man faces up to seven and a half years in prison due to recidivism.

Remand and Investigation

At the request of the Żoliborz prosecutor’s office, the court applied a three-month remand against him.

Actions in this case are supervised by the District Prosecutor’s Office Warsaw-Żoliborz.
