Polish Speaker Urges President to Approve Constitutional Tribunal Judges

Włodzimierz Czarzasty, a Polish parliamentary speaker, publicly called on President Karol Nawrocki to swiftly approve the appointment of newly elected Constitutional Tribunal judges on March 18.

Letter to Nawrocki: “Don’t Be Afraid”

Włodzimierz Czarzasty stated the situation appears clear, describing it as “playing for time.” He urged President Nawrocki not to obstruct Poland’s processes and to act courageously, without hiding behind the President of the Constitutional Tribunal.

Czarzasty appealed to the President to make a decision, overcome any fear, and fulfill his duties, expressing his wish for the President’s courage.

Appeal for Immediate Action on Judge Appointments

Czarzasty formally requested President Nawrocki to take immediate action to enable the assumption of office by judges of the Constitutional Tribunal elected by the Sejm on March 13, 2026, filling existing vacancies.

President’s Office Cites Procedural Concerns

Rafał Leśkiewicz, the President’s spokesperson, announced that Nawrocki will respond to Czarzasty with a letter addressing several formal and legal doubts. These concerns center on the expedited process for nominating candidates to the Constitutional Tribunal.

Concerns Over Selection Process Timing

Leśkiewicz emphasized that the President acknowledges the judges were elected by the Sejm but questions the timing and procedure of the selection, noting the first vacancies arose in late 2023.

Constitutional Tribunal’s Current Composition

The Constitutional Tribunal currently has 9 out of 15 judges. The Sejm elected six judges on March 13, nominated by the Sejm Presidium. Two candidates put forward by the PiS party did not receive support.
