Saudi Arabia is considering military responses to Iranian attacks, following a recent strike on Riyadh and escalating tensions in the region.
Saudi Arabia Prepares for Potential Military Response
Saudi Arabia is preparing for potential military action against Iran, expressing strong condemnation of Tehran’s actions.
Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan stated on Thursday that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to take military action against Iran, emphasizing a significant loss of trust in Tehran.
Iranian Attack on Riyadh Triggers Response
The minister’s statement follows an Iranian attack on the Saudi capital, Riyadh, which occurred on Wednesday. Iranian ballistic missiles were intercepted near a hotel where foreign ministers from numerous countries, including Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, and Syria, were gathered to discuss Middle Eastern affairs.
Farhan accused Iran of deliberately hostile actions against its neighbors, warning that such pressure would be counterproductive.
Escalation Following Strikes on Iranian Gas Facility
Iran attacked Riyadh after Israeli and American forces targeted a major Iranian gas facility in Bandar Kangan, on the Persian Gulf. The South Pars/North Dome field, the world’s largest known gas reserve shared with Qatar, was the target.
Tehran retaliated by threatening attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Persian Gulf and launching missiles towards Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh Experiences Direct Impact of Attacks
Saudi Arabia has been targeted by numerous Iranian attacks since the start of the Israel-US conflict with Iran, but Wednesday’s attack marked the first time many Riyadh residents heard explosions or received warning messages on their phones.
Missile Interception and Damage
The Saudi Ministry of Defense reported intercepting four ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh, with some debris falling near a refinery south of the capital.
Diplomatic Relations and Future Prospects
Saudi Arabia and Iran resumed diplomatic relations in 2023. While Riyadh still prefers a diplomatic solution, Farhan emphasized that continued Iranian actions would severely hinder any possibility of rebuilding trust.
