British authorities arrested a man and a woman near HMNB Clyde naval base on suspicion of espionage, raising security concerns.

Iranian Nationals Attempted Base Access

The Sun newspaper reported that a 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old woman of undetermined nationality were arrested on Thursday near HMNB Clyde, a key Royal Navy base.

The Royal Navy confirmed the pair attempted to access the base on March 19th but were unsuccessful. An investigation is ongoing, limiting further comment.

Initial Attempt by Vehicle

According to military sources cited by The Sun, the suspects initially attempted to enter the base in a vehicle. They were turned away by military police.

The pair remained in the vicinity of the base, exhibiting suspicious behavior, leading to their arrest.

HMNB Clyde: A Critical Nuclear Deterrent Base

HMNB Clyde is one of three Royal Navy bases currently in operation in the United Kingdom.

It is of critical importance to the UK’s nuclear deterrent, as it is home to submarines equipped with nuclear warheads. Any attempted intrusion or reconnaissance around the base is treated with the utmost seriousness.

Rising Tensions Following Tehran Warning

While not directly involved in US-Israeli attacks on Iran, the UK has allowed its regional bases to be used for defensive strikes against Iranian missile storage and launch facilities.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragczi warned British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper that Tehran would consider such actions as “participation in aggression.”
