Iranian Rocket Fails Mid-Flight During Attack on U.S. Base

An Iranian rocket experienced a technical malfunction during flight toward a U.S. base, while another was intercepted by an American warship on Friday morning.

Strategic Asset: Diego Garcia

Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean serves as a strategic base for U.S. bomber aviation. The attempted attack followed London’s announcement allowing the U.S. to use its military bases to strike Iranian missile facilities targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Failed Iranian Attack

According to reports, one of the rockets suffered a technical failure in flight. A U.S. warship launched an SM-3 anti-ballistic missile toward the second projectile. It remains unclear whether the intercept was successful or if the Iranian rocket missed its target.

Extended Range Concerns

The Wall Street Journal notes that Tehran’s attempt to strike targets approximately 4,000 km away suggests Iranian missiles may have a range twice as large as previously acknowledged. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragczi had previously stated their range was limited to 2,000 km.

The White House and Pentagon have not issued an official statement on the matter.

Escalating Conflict

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated their air force was “striking Iranian terrorist regime targets in Tehran,” with explosions reported in western parts of the city. Earlier, Israeli defenses intercepted ballistic missiles over the Dead Sea.

Regional Spillover & Iranian Threat

Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry reported downing over 20 drones, primarily in the east of the country. Dubai authorities stated explosions were the result of “successful interception operations” by defense systems. Kuwait’s defense ministry also announced repelling “hostile missile and drone attacks.”

Tehran, via state media, threatened to strike the UAE “with decisive force” due to a dispute over the Abu Musa and Greater Tunb islands in the Strait of Hormuz.

Initial Strikes & Closure of Strait of Hormuz

On February 28th, Israel and the U.S. began strikes on targets in Iran. In response, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz – a vital sea lane through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply is transported annually.
