Iran Nuclear Facility in Natanz Attacked, Allegedly by US and Israel

The Natanz nuclear facility in Iran was reportedly attacked, with both the US and Israel implicated, raising concerns about regional escalation.

No Radioactive Leak Reported

Authorities stated there was no radioactive leak and no threat to nearby residents following the attack. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Iran informed them of the incident, noting no increase in radiation levels outside the facility.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated calls for restraint to avoid a potential nuclear incident.

Previous Attacks and Facility Details

The Natanz facility was previously targeted in a joint US-Israeli operation last June and again since the start of the current conflict on February 28th. The extent of the damage remains unknown.

Located approximately 230 km south of Tehran, Natanz is a key component of Iran’s nuclear program, used for uranium enrichment. It comprises both underground and above-ground facilities.

Contradiction of IAEA Chief’s Statement

The attack contradicts statements made three days prior by IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, who said there were no indications of impending attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran has previously accused the US and Israel of attacks on its Natanz enrichment center.

Iranian Counterattack Claimed

Iranian media reported that the Iranian army attacked fuel tanks at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel using drones.

Iran’s Nuclear Capabilities

Western nations have long accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran denies, maintaining its program is for civilian energy purposes. However, Iran has significantly increased uranium enrichment levels beyond those suitable for peaceful applications.

According to UN estimates, Iran possesses approximately 440 kg of uranium enriched to 60%, enough to potentially build eight to ten nuclear bombs if further enriched to 90%.

Israel Signals Intensified Attacks

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that attacks against the Islamic Republic will intensify. He stated that the intensity of attacks by the Israeli and American armies on infrastructure used by Iran will increase significantly this week.

Katz emphasized Israel’s determination to continue targeting the Iranian regime, eliminating its commanders and neutralizing its strategic capabilities until all threats to Israel’s security and American interests in the region are eliminated.
