A new United Surveys poll for Wirtualna Polska indicates nearly half of Poles believe President Karol Nawrocki’s vetoes of legislation are politically motivated to obstruct the government.
President’s Vetoes: Political Maneuvering or Concern for the State?
The United Surveys poll for Wirtualna Polska reveals a significant division in public opinion regarding President Karol Nawrocki’s vetoes of laws passed by the Sejm.
48.6 percent of respondents believe the president’s vetoes are “exclusively motivated by a political desire to block the actions of the current government.”
Public Opinion on Presidential Motives
Conversely, 32.5 percent of those surveyed believe President Nawrocki is primarily guided by “exclusive concern for the state and the quality of the law” when vetoing legislation. 18.9 percent of respondents were unable to definitively identify his motivations.
Political Affiliations Shape Views
Responses vary significantly based on political sympathies. 93 percent of supporters of the current ruling coalition (KO, Third Way, Left) believe Karol Nawrocki is solely motivated by a desire to block the government. Only 6 percent see merit-based reasons in his decisions, and 1 percent are undecided.
Opposition Supporters See Merit in Vetoes
Among supporters of the opposition (PiS, Confederation, Razem), 65 percent believe the vetoes stem from concern for the quality of law and the good of the state. 15 percent view them as strictly political actions, and 20 percent selected “don’t know.”
Confederation Voters Divided
Within the electorate of the Confederation and Confederation Korony Polskiej, faith in the president’s merit-based motivations stands at 36 percent, compared to 21 percent attributing political motives. 42 percent of this electorate remains undecided.
Undecided Voters and Lack of Opinion
Among undecided or non-voting individuals, two trends dominate: either a belief in the political nature of the vetoes (41 percent), or – most commonly – a lack of opinion on the matter (46 percent). 13 percent of this group believe Nawrocki is motivated by concern for the state.
Survey Methodology
The United Surveys poll by IBRiS for Wirtualna Polska was conducted between March 13-15 using the CATI&CAWI method, on a representative group of 1000 adult Poles. (PAP)
