Unidentified Drone Found Near Border
An unidentified flying object, initially believed to be a military observation drone, was discovered near Osieka in Bartoszyce County. The device lay in a field approximately 20 kilometers from Poland’s border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast. The Military Gendarmerie and military prosecutor’s office in Olsztyn are handling the case. Authorities currently emphasize that the device has no combat capabilities.
Information about the suspicious object reached Bartoszyce police Saturday morning. The report came from a person who spotted an object resembling an unmanned aerial vehicle in a field. Officers arriving at the scene confirmed the device’s presence and secured the area until other services arrived.
According to information provided by Sub-inspector Marta Kabelis from the Bartoszyce District Police Headquarters, officers immediately notified the military and prosecutor’s office. Procedural actions for identifying the object and determining its origin began at the scene.
Lieutenant Colonel Dariusz Rozkosz, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Military Gendarmerie, stated that initial inspections indicate the device is military in nature. He noted that everything suggests it is a drone intended for observation and reconnaissance, not for combat operations. This is important information, as observation drones typically lack weaponry or systems for carrying explosives. However, authorities are not ruling out any scenario and are analyzing both the device’s construction and its electronic equipment.
Military Gendarmerie Investigates
The proceedings are supervised by the 8th Military Affairs Department of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Olsztyn. Investigators and specialists analyzing military and aviation equipment are still working at the scene. Structural elements, electronic systems, and potential data carriers that could help determine the machine’s flight path are being secured.
Investigators are examining, among other things, whether the drone intentionally violated Polish airspace or entered Polish territory due to malfunction or loss of contact with its operator. Data on radar activity in the region and records from airspace monitoring systems are also to be analyzed.
Authorities are very cautious about information regarding markings on the device. Police have not confirmed reports of possible Russian inscriptions on the found object. Asked about this, Sub-inspector Marta Kabelis only stated that it is too early to release such information to the public.
Rising Tensions at Poland’s Eastern Border
The discovery of the unidentified drone has again drawn attention to security issues along Poland’s eastern border. Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Polish authorities have repeatedly recorded incidents involving airspace violations by missiles, drones, and other military objects.
One of the most serious cases was in September last year, when, according to information provided by authorities, dozens of Russian drones may have entered Polish territory. Some of them reportedly moved near the border with Kaliningrad Oblast and over the northeastern part of the country.
It is currently unknown whether the object found near Bartoszyce is similar to drones discovered in September 2025. Experts note, however, that reconnaissance drones can cover significant distances, and loss of control over them is not ruled out, especially in cases of GPS signal jamming or technical problems.
Drones: A Growing Challenge for Polish Services
In recent months, the Polish army has been intensely developing systems for detecting and neutralizing unmanned aerial vehicles. This applies to both large military drones and small structures used for observing critical infrastructure or intelligence operations.
The increasing number of incidents involving unidentified objects means that the military and border services are increasing patrols and modernizing radar systems. The Warmia and Masuria and Podlasie regions are particularly important, where proximity to the Russian and Belarusian borders leads to an increased risk of similar events.
Security experts emphasize that even unarmed drones can pose a threat. They can be used for military reconnaissance, monitoring energy infrastructure, or testing the reaction of state defense systems.
For now, authorities have not provided information on whether the object found near Bartoszyce was active at the time of discovery or its technical condition. It is only known that procedural actions are still ongoing, and detailed expert analyses are expected to answer where exactly the drone came from and how it entered Polish territory.
