Three drones penetrated the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania within two days, prompting calls for strengthened air defenses.
Drone Incidents and NATO Concerns
Three drones entered the territories of the Baltic states over just 48 hours, according to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys. He stated these incidents represent a new reality for the region and highlight the urgent need to bolster air defense capabilities.
Budrys emphasized that the countries are not fully protected against such incidents and must increase their air defense capabilities, speaking in an interview with public broadcaster LRT.
Geopolitical Risk and Potential Conflict
The Lithuanian minister also noted that the current geopolitical situation significantly increases the level of risk. He warned that the threat of armed conflict, utilizing long-range weaponry, is high.
Recent Drone Activity
Simultaneous incidents occurred in Estonia and Latvia. Early Wednesday morning, a drone originating from Russia struck a chimney at the Auvere power plant in northeastern Estonia. Concurrently, another drone violated Latvian airspace and exploded.
These events coincided with a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region, further complicating the assessment of the situation and demonstrating the evolving nature of modern conflicts.
Regional Security Challenge
Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stressed that the scale of the threat extends beyond a single country. He stated that the war instigated by Russia has led to a situation where drones have penetrated the territories of all three Baltic states within 48 hours.
Kaunas emphasized that air defense is a challenge not only for Lithuania but for the entire NATO alliance.
Ukrainian Drone on Lithuanian Territory
Another incident occurred overnight between Monday and Tuesday on Lithuanian territory. A drone crashed and subsequently exploded in the Oran region, near the border with Belarus. Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene confirmed it was a Ukrainian drone linked to an operation against Russia.
Notably, the drone was not detected by either Lithuanian or Belarusian radar systems, likely flying below 300 meters to avoid identification.
Need for Enhanced Defenses
Lithuanian authorities believe urgent strengthening of air defense systems and closer cooperation within NATO are necessary. The Baltic region is becoming a key area for testing new forms of warfare, where drones play an increasingly significant role.
