Spanish Woman, 25, Dies by Euthanasia After Years-Long Legal Battle

Noelia Castillo Ramos, a Spanish woman paralyzed after a gang rape, has died by euthanasia at 25 following a protracted legal challenge from her father.

Collective Assault and Initial Trauma

In 2022, the woman was the victim of a gang rape at a juvenile facility. Following this trauma, she attempted suicide by jumping from the fifth floor, resulting in paralysis.

“My day is horror and pain. Every day it is more and more difficult to bear. I am exhausted. I just want to leave in peace and stop suffering,” she stated.

Legal Battle Over Euthanasia Request

In 2024, Noelia submitted a request for euthanasia, which was approved by a special medical commission in Catalonia. However, the process was suspended due to legal action initiated by her father.

Supported by the Catholic organization Abogados Cristianos, the father launched a court battle to keep his daughter alive against her will.

Father’s Claims and Mental Health Concerns

According to the newspaper “El Pais,” the father argued that his daughter had mental health problems and was not capable of making decisions about her own life. He claimed that before the assault, she “was under the care of the Spanish mental health system.”

Commission Approval and Court Confirmation

Noelia’s request for euthanasia was submitted to the Commission for Guarantees and Evaluation of Catalonia (CGAC), an independent body that oversees the proper application of euthanasia regulations.

Her condition was deemed “serious, chronic, and preventing normal functioning,” and the commission approved her request. In March 2025, Noelia reaffirmed her request in court, but her father continued to file appeals.

The legal battle ultimately reached the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the woman. Appeals to the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg were also unsuccessful and dismissed. On March 24th, a final decision paved the way for her euthanasia.

Euthanasia Procedure and Aftermath

Noelia Castillo Ramos underwent euthanasia on Thursday, March 26th. According to Okdiario, close family members pleaded with her to reconsider. Shortly before 6 PM, she was reportedly administered three drugs: sedatives, anesthetics, and substances inducing coma along with muscle relaxants.

The procedure lasted between a few minutes and a few dozen minutes, and Noelia passed away according to her wishes, in solitude, without family present.

National Debate on Euthanasia

Her death has reignited the debate on euthanasia in Spain, which was legalized in the country in 2021, making it the fourth European nation—after the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg—to allow the practice.

A 2021 survey by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) showed that 72.4% of Spaniards supported the right to euthanasia, while 15% opposed it.
