Russia Withdraws Consular Rights in Kaliningrad, Closing Poland’s Consulate

Poland’s consulate in Kaliningrad closes after Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs withdraws consular privileges, triggering diplomatic tension between the nations.

Consulate Closure Announcement

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on August 29th that the General Consulate of Poland in Kaliningrad has ceased operations due to Russia’s refusal to grant further authorization for the office’s function.

Polish Ambassador’s Response

During the formal handover ceremony, Polish Ambassador Krzysztof Krajewski expressed regret over the “unjustified decision” of Russian authorities. He expressed hope for the eventual return of diplomatic presence in Kaliningrad and invoked history’s judgment on current Russian leadership responsible for aggression against Ukraine and the hardships their citizens, including numerous notable artists, have faced.

Remaining Diplomatic Facilities

Currently, Poland maintains an Embassy in Moscow and a Consulate General in Irkutsk within Russian Federation.
