Presidential Office Reacts to Trump’s Words

US President Donald Trump stated in an interview published Wednesday with the British newspaper “The Telegraph” that he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, and described the North Atlantic Alliance as a “paper tiger.”

Bogucki’s Response During Briefing

Bogucki, questioned during a Wednesday briefing on whether these words were taken seriously by the Presidential Chancellery and whether President Karol Nawrocki is attempting to dissuade the US President from this course of action, noted that when the information appeared, he was attending the swearing-in of two Constitutional Tribunal judges. He therefore lacks full knowledge of Trump’s statement.

“Various words are spoken in the public sphere, and I think that here, as in diplomacy, one must always approach this with calm, distance, and consistency in pursuing Polish interests. And the President will certainly handle every matter, including this one, very effectively,” replied the head of the Presidential Chancellery.

Will Nawrocki Speak with Trump About NATO?

Bogucki was asked if Nawrocki would call the US President if these announcements began to materialize. “If we were to deal with all statements – I’m not just talking about President Trump here, but in general about this information, more or less verified, true and false, circulating in the public sphere – we would be dealing with many things that later, frankly, do not materialize. Politics is the ability to achieve goals and implement what is actually happening,” Bogucki said.

Media Information and Alliance Stability

He emphasized that this is media information, and as he noted, “various media reports, also from the US, from Washington, have come and aroused various emotions, and then those emotions have calmed down very quickly and we have moved in a good direction as allies in NATO and in this transatlantic community of free nations.” He expressed confidence that this will continue.

Poland-US Relations and Alliance Obligations

Referring to Poland’s relations with the US, the head of the Presidential Chancellery noted that “these relations are as good as can be, we are allies and I deeply believe that we will remain allies in NATO.” “It is in the interest of all free nations that this Alliance should endure, that this Alliance should be stable and strong, but this Alliance also requires responsibility from those who for many years have disregarded their obligations within the Alliance,” Bogucki said.

He specified that he meant “some Western countries” which, as he said, “in a frivolous, completely unthought-out and completely irresponsible way did not fulfill their allied obligations.” “As I recall, President Trump during his first term called on the Germans to fulfill their commitment to spend 2 percent (of GDP) on the army. This went unanswered,” he added. He simultaneously emphasized that “it is the right of all free nations that the Alliance should endure, and that states should fulfill their obligations and that we should be strong within the transatlantic community.”
