Putin Dismisses Zelensky’s Peace Proposal as “Impolite”

During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday, Vladimir Putin mocked a peace proposal from Volodymyr Zelensky, declaring that the war will only conclude once Russia achieves its stated objectives.

Putin’s Rejection of Peace Talks

Vladimir Putin stated that the war in Ukraine will conclude “without a shadow of a doubt” only when Russia realizes its strategic goals. Referring to the open letter sent by Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, Putin dismissed the proposal as relevant only to the Ukrainian side, claiming it serves as a tactic to stall Russian military advances.

The Russian president claimed he had not initially read the letter, later characterizing it as containing “rather impolite remarks.” He questioned whether the correspondence was intended to facilitate a meeting or to avoid one, ultimately suggesting that negotiations should be left to specialists before any face-to-face summit occurs.

Critiques of Zelensky’s Style

During his address, Putin frequently revisited the topic of the letter, despite asserting that he would not address “lovers of the epistolary genre.” He also mocked the Ukrainian president’s appearance, comparing his attire to the style of the character “Rambo: First Blood.”

Zelensky’s Open Letter and Warnings

In his open letter, Zelensky proposed a direct bilateral format to end the war and offered a full ceasefire to allow for negotiations. He noted that Ukraine is prepared to halt hostilities while talks proceed.

Zelensky further warned that Russian domestic support for the war is waning due to drone strikes, fuel shortages, and mobilization efforts. He claimed that the Kremlin’s resources are shrinking and that Putin would soon lack the financial and political capital to maintain public loyalty.
