Polish Justice Minister Investigates Kłodzko Pedophilia Case, Demands Explanations

Poland’s Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has launched an investigation into a Kłodzko case involving sexual abuse and a lenient sentence for an accomplice.

Justice Minister Seeks Details on Kłodzko Case

Waldemar Żurek confirmed he requested detailed information from the National Prosecutor regarding the Kłodzko case, citing his responsibility for the prosecution service’s image. He expressed concern over the 6.5-year sentence given to the wife of the perpetrator, despite prosecutors seeking an 18-year term.

Żurek stated he is analyzing the documents received and emphasized the gravity of the case, describing it as “a real nightmare.”

Details of the Case

On March 19th, the District Court in Świdnica sentenced a 41-year-old woman to 6.5 years in prison for failing to assist a minor experiencing sexual abuse and for witnessing acts of animal abuse (zoophilia). Her husband was previously sentenced to 25 years for similar offenses, including zoophilia.

Calls for Harsher Penalties

Żurek stressed he respects court rulings but wants to understand the woman’s role in the case. He believes the severity of the crimes warrants the strictest possible punishments, stating, “The nightmare of this case is so great. There should be the harshest penalties.”

He also highlighted the importance of support for prosecutors, who often face criticism from all sides, and his commitment to ensuring the proper functioning of state institutions.

Prosecutor General’s Stance

The Prosecutor General stated that the case is horrific and requires the most severe punishments as a deterrent. He also noted that the case is not suitable for public comment due to the graphic nature of the allegations.

Political Reactions and Scrutiny

Dariusz Korneluk, the National Prosecutor, stated that no one attempted to interfere with the investigation. He indicated that a request for justification of the rulings has been made and a decision on appeal will be made after analysis.

Donald Tusk responded to the case, criticizing attempts to politicize the issue of pedophilia and referencing a separate case involving a prominent PiS politician. Michał Woś, a former Deputy Minister of Justice, called for scrutiny of the case, particularly regarding the role of a KO official in Kłodzko.
