DNA Links Ted Bundy to 1974 Teen Murder

Decades after the crime, DNA evidence now connects serial killer Ted Bundy to the 1974 murder of 17-year-old Laura Ann Aime in Utah.

The 1974 Murder of Laura Ann Aime

Laura Ann Aime, 17, disappeared on October 31, 1974, after leaving a Halloween party to go to a store. Her body was found approximately a month later by tourists near American Fork Canyon along a highway.

The teenager was found bound, beaten, and naked. Authorities stated evidence suggested she may have been held alive for several days after her abduction.

Long-Held Suspicions of Ted Bundy

Investigators long suspected Ted Bundy was responsible for the murder. He reportedly confessed to the crime before his execution in Florida in 1989, but conclusive proof remained elusive.

Breakthrough with New Technology

In 1974, evidence from the case was carefully preserved, allowing investigators to re-examine it years later and select portions likely containing usable DNA samples.

In 2023, a state forensic laboratory acquired new technology capable of extracting DNA even from small, degraded samples or those containing DNA from multiple individuals. This technology identified a single male DNA profile from the evidence in Laura’s case.

The profile was then submitted to a national law enforcement database and matched to Ted Bundy’s DNA.

Implications for Other Cases

This DNA profile can now be used by other law enforcement agencies investigating Bundy’s potential involvement in numerous unsolved murders.

Ted Bundy: A History of Violence

Ted Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killers in United States history. He confessed to killing 30 women, but experts believe he may have committed as many as 100 murders.

His first confirmed victim was 18-year-old dancer and student Karen Sparks (also known as Joni Lenz). Bundy was arrested in 1975 but escaped custody twice—once for six days and again for several weeks, during which he killed three more people.

On July 31, 1979, Ted Bundy was sentenced to death by electrocution, and the sentence was carried out on January 24, 1989.
