The U.S. Embassy in Iraq has issued an urgent warning regarding potential attacks targeting U.S. citizens, institutions, and companies within the country.
U.S. Embassy Issues Urgent Warning
The U.S. Embassy in Iraq warned of potential threats to U.S. citizens and American-affiliated interests, including businesses, universities, diplomatic facilities, energy infrastructure, hotels, and airports, citing past instances of kidnappings.
Despite a reported lack of preventative action by the Iraqi government against terrorist attacks, the embassy cautioned that militia groups may be linked to the Iraqi government, with some terrorists potentially possessing government identification.
$3 Million Reward for Information
The U.S. State Department is offering a $3 million reward for information leading to the prevention of attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Iraq, which have been targeted since the start of the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.
Continued Operations Despite Concerns
The embassy stated it remains open to assist American citizens in Iraq, despite the evacuation advisory, and issued its first warning on March 26th.
Escalation of Regional Tensions
The U.S. State Department previously offered $10 million for information on key Iranian officials, including new leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Recent Attacks and Iranian Threats
The United States and Israel began attacks on Iran on February 28th, with Iranian media reporting the deaths of key leaders shortly after. In response, Tehran and affiliated groups have targeted U.S. and Israeli military bases and diplomatic facilities in the Persian Gulf region.
A drone attack on a U.S. diplomatic facility near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq occurred on March 21st.
Disruptions to Maritime Traffic
Iranian authorities have imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, prompting many shipping companies to avoid the route due to safety concerns. This has led to a significant increase in global oil prices, as approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the strait.
