A 40-year-old man remains hospitalized after being set on fire by two attackers on his yacht in Szczecin last Wednesday, forcing him to leap into the Oder river to survive.
The Attack and Rescue
The fire occurred on Wednesday, May 27, when the yacht owner was attacked on his vessel. Eyewitnesses alerted the fire department, and due to the victim jumping into the river, WOPR rescue teams and paramedics were dispatched to the scene.
The 40-year-old victim suffered extensive burns to his upper and lower limbs as well as his abdomen. He was transported to a hospital where he provided authorities with an account of the events.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Initial findings suggested the fire was the result of a deliberate act. Police determined that the victim was subjected to a brutal assault, during which two perpetrators made criminal threats before a 33-year-old Szczecin resident set the man on fire.
The victim managed to escape the flames by jumping into the water. Police subsequently arrested both suspects; the 33-year-old now faces charges of attempted murder, while both suspects are charged with issuing criminal threats.
Judicial Measures
Upon the motion of the police and prosecutor, the court ordered the suspects to be held in custody. One individual was remanded for one month, while the 33-year-old suspect charged with attempted murder was placed in a three-month pre-trial detention.
