Prime Minister Donald Tusk has doubled financial aid for participants and families affected by the 1956 Poznań protests against communist rule.

Government Increases Financial Support

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has doubled the funds available for individuals involved in the Poznań June 1956 uprising and the families of deceased participants. Applications are being accepted until the end of April.

This year, the total aid pool has been increased from 500,000 zł to 1 million zł.

Historical Context: Poznań June ‘56

2024 marks the 70th anniversary of Poznań June, one of the first major demonstrations against the communist regime in the Eastern Bloc. During the uprising, 50 civilians, four soldiers, three UB (Security Bureau) officers, and one police officer lost their lives. Hundreds more were injured.

Eligibility Criteria for Assistance

The Wielkopolska Provincial Office in Poznań has announced that aid is available to active participants in Poznań June 1956 who are currently facing financial hardship. Funds will be allocated to those who suffered health consequences, repression from security forces, workplace repercussions, or provided assistance to victims of the uprising.

Spouses of deceased participants may also be eligible under certain conditions.

Aid Program History and Government Statement

Financial assistance for participants of Poznań June was first introduced in 2006. This year, Prime Minister Tusk increased the funding from 500,000 zł to 1 million zł.

Wojewoda Karolina Fabiś-Szulc stated, “Poznań June ’56 is a living memory of all those who dared to oppose the regime and showed the great strength of Polish national unity. The attitude of Poznań residents in 1956 remains a model of civic courage, which after 70 years inspires subsequent generations. We, as a state, want to thank them for this attitude and their determination.”

Application Process and Review

Applications for the funds are now being accepted. A commission comprised of office staff and representatives from organizations representing participants of Poznań June 1956 will review the applications.

The 1956 Poznań Workers’ Protest

The Poznań workers’ protest began on the morning of June 28, 1956, when employees of the W3 Cegielski Plants (then ZISPO) went on strike. Workers organized a general strike and street demonstration, which was brutally suppressed by the militia and army.

Significance of Poznań June

Poznań June was the first “Polish June.” The mass demonstration significantly accelerated political and economic changes in the Polish People’s Republic.
