Six newly elected Constitutional Tribunal judges took their oaths in the Sejm, after a dispute over a swearing-in ceremony with President Karol Nawrocki.

Judges Sworn In at Sejm

The ceremony of swearing in newly elected judges of the Constitutional Tribunal began in the Column Hall of the Sejm.

The judges will also receive resolutions regarding their election by the Sejm.

Judges Present at Ceremony

Six judges elected by the Sejm on March 13th were present: Krystian Markiewicz, Maciej Taborowski, Marcin Dziurda, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, Magdalena Bentkowska, and Dariusz Szostek. Bentkowska and Szostek previously swore their oaths before the President on April 1st.

Also in attendance were Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty, and former presidents of the Constitutional Tribunal: Marek Safjan, Jerzy Stępień, Bohdan Zdziennicki, and Andrzej Zoll, as well as Dorota Markiewicz, president of the Court of Appeal in Warsaw.

Invitation to President Rejected

Four of the six newly elected judges – Markiewicz, Taborowski, Dziurda, and Korwin-Piotrowska – invited President Karol Nawrocki to the ceremony.

In identical letters, the judges stated they had requested a swearing-in date at the Presidential Palace but received no response.

Presidential Office Objects to Alternative Swearing-In

On Wednesday evening, the Head of the Presidential Chancellery, Zbigniew Bogucki, stated on Polsat News that the planned swearing-in would not take place before the President.

Legal Implications of Alternative Procedure

Bogucki stated on Thursday that attempts to replace the statutory procedure for swearing in Constitutional Tribunal judges with another form must be seen as a refusal to comply with the law.

He added that this triggers the legal consequence of resignation from the position of judge of the Tribunal.

Members of the Gazeta Polska clubs, as well as activists and supporters of the Border Defense Movement, gathered outside the Sejm building on ul. Wiejska to protest.
