Painless Gastroscopy with Free Anesthesia Available Through National Health Fund

Polish patients can now undergo gastroscopy under anesthesia at no cost if medically indicated, easing discomfort associated with the diagnostic procedure.

What is Gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is a fundamental diagnostic examination of the upper digestive tract, assessing the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It plays a crucial role in the early detection of cancerous diseases, ulcers, and inflammatory conditions.

How is Gastroscopy Performed?

The examination is conducted using a gastoscope – a long, flexible tube with a camera, typically around 10 mm in diameter. This allows for detailed visualization of the digestive tract.

Gastroscopy Duration and Procedure

A standard gastroscopy takes approximately 5 minutes. The duration may increase if biopsies are required or if the patient doesn’t fully cooperate with the doctor.

Anesthesia Options: Local vs. General

Gastroscopy can be performed without anesthesia, with local anesthesia, or under general anesthesia. While biopsy collection is generally painless, the insertion of the endoscope can be uncomfortable and may cause gagging or a strong urge to vomit.

Free Anesthesia Coverage Through the NFZ

The National Health Fund (NFZ) fully covers sedation if there are medical indications. However, simply expressing fear may not be sufficient to qualify for coverage; many facilities offer a commercial surcharge for sedation with NFZ-covered examinations.

Commercial Gastroscopy Costs

Commercial gastroscopy prices typically range from 400 to 600 zł. This excludes the cost of biopsies, histopathological examination, and anesthesia, which can add up to 1000 zł with general anesthesia.
