Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) introduces a new pensioner ID card on July 12, 2026, unlocking hundreds of złoty in potential savings for seniors.

Pensioner ID Card 2026: Why Have One?

The pensioner ID card, also known as the senior card, is a document issued by the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) to individuals receiving pensions, benefits, or teacher’s compensatory allowances. The card, whether in the mObywatel app or plastic form, contains all the necessary data confirming a senior’s eligibility for discounts.

This document officially confirms beneficiary status and, importantly, enables pensioners and beneficiaries to utilize all available discounts and exemptions.

New Pensioner ID Card Format in 2026: What About Existing Cards?

From July 12, 2026, ZUS will introduce new designs for pensioner ID cards. This reform has raised questions among beneficiaries regarding the validity of their current cards. The good news is that there is no mandatory replacement of the pensioner ID card.

If your current card is legible and undamaged, you can continue to use it until its expiration date.

How Much Can You Save in 2026 with a Pensioner ID Card?

The card, whether on your phone or in plastic form, unlocks significant savings. Here are some of the most popular benefits:

Savings Examples in 2026

Exemption from the radio and television fee – savings: 366 zł per year. Seniors who have reached 60 years of age and whose pension does not exceed half the average wage (or are 75 years of age or older) do not have to pay for television and radio. This is one of the easiest benefits to obtain, immediately reducing fixed expenses.

Cheaper passport – savings: 70 zł. With the pensioner ID card, seniors will pay only 70 zł for a passport instead of the standard 140 zł. The 50% discount applies to all beneficiaries regardless of income.

Travel by train and public transport. Seniors are entitled to two PKP journeys per year with a 37% discount. In most cities, seniors aged 65 or 70 and over travel completely free of charge or on the basis of very cheap annual tickets.

Culture and Recreation – savings: approx. 300 zł per year. Admission to state museums, theaters, or art galleries with the ID card is usually half price. In 2026, more and more cinemas are also introducing “Cheap Tuesdays for Seniors,” where tickets cost a fraction of the standard price.

Digital or Plastic – Which to Choose?

In 2026, it is best to have both cards – digital and traditional. mLegitymacja is a good and simple solution, and its activation is free and immediate. A plastic card will be useful in case of a discharged battery or lack of internet access on the train.
