Former Champion Faces Legal Consequences
Ex-Spanish cyclist Oscar Freire, a three-time world champion in the road race, has been sentenced to nine days of house arrest for harassing his wife, with whom he is currently divorcing.
The incident occurred last Sunday in Torrelaveda, Freire’s hometown, where he addressed his wife with words deemed by the court to have “disturbed the complainant’s peace of mind, violating her moral integrity” while leaving a church service in front of others.
Freire Admits Guilt
Oscar Freire pleaded guilty to the charges.
The 50-year-old Freire was taken into custody on Sunday and sentenced on Monday, accepting the prosecutor’s recommended sentence.
A Decorated Career
Freire is a world champion from 1999, 2001, and 2004, making him one of five cyclists with three titles, alongside Alfredo Binda, Rik van Steenbergen, Eddy Merckx, and Peter Sagan.
Additional Achievements
In addition to his three world championships, Freire won a bronze medal in 2000, finishing behind Romāns Vainšteins and Zbigniew Spruch.
