Ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, approximately 500 rowers have voiced concerns about competing on the crocodile-inhabited Fitzroy River in Rockhampton.
Rowers Demand Venue Change Amid Crocodile Fears
Organizers of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics have no plans to alter the rowing venue on the Fitzroy River, despite concerns regarding the presence of crocodiles. In March, around 500 athletes signed an open letter requesting a location change.
The Rockhampton waterway, a natural crocodile habitat, is located approximately 600 km north of Brisbane. Since the announcement of the Fitzroy River as the rowing competition site in 2025, reactions have been mixed, primarily due to the presence of dangerous reptiles and strong currents.
Olympic Champion Highlights Potential Disadvantages
Three-time Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn pointed out that athletes may face disadvantages depending on the positioning of lanes on the river.
Government Remains Firm on Venue Location
Approximately 500 rowers signed an open letter in March, urging a reconsideration of the venue. The Brisbane City Council even suggested an alternative location in Moreton Bay, but Queensland Minister for the Olympics Tim Mander stated that organizers are not considering other options.
“We are determined, we are not looking at alternatives. The rowing will be in Rockhampton. There is no reason to look at alternatives when we have the level of confidence that we have,” Mander emphasized.
World Rowing to Assess Venue Safety
The Fitzroy River underwent preliminary tests by the Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority for the Games last October. An expert from World Rowing, the international rowing federation, will evaluate the site in the coming weeks and make a decision on its suitability as an Olympic venue by mid-year.
The federation previously acknowledged potential issues but pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the safety and fairness of the competition.
Standard Procedure, No Concerns Raised
Mander noted that the assessment by World Rowing is a standard procedure. “Nothing they have said to date raises any concerns for us in terms of moving forward,” the minister stated.
Games Scheduled for July-August 2032
