David Daniel, who assaulted police during the January 6th Capitol riot and received a pardon from Donald Trump, has now pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse.
Capitol Breach and Presidential Pardon
On January 6, 2021, thousands of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory, responding to the outgoing president’s claims of election fraud. The riot resulted in five deaths and over 130 injured police officers.
Donald Trump pardoned approximately 1500 individuals convicted of offenses related to the Capitol attack, including leaders of far-right extremist groups like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
Dual Legal Proceedings
David Daniel initially pleaded guilty to assaulting law enforcement officers during the Capitol attack shortly before Trump’s return to the White House and the granting of pardons.
In January of this year, a court ruled that the child sexual abuse charges were unrelated to the Capitol events, meaning Trump’s pardon only covered the attack on the Capitol and did not apply to the separate abuse case.
Child Exploitation Admission
David Daniel has now pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse in a North Carolina court, having reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
Seeking Help
Sexual violence is defined as any unwanted sexual contact. UNICEF data indicates approximately 15 million adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 worldwide have experienced such violence, yet only 1% seek professional help. Research suggests 80% of rape victims develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
