Polish President Defends Crypto Veto, Accuses Government of Delayed Information

President Karol Nawrocki staunchly defended his veto of a cryptocurrency bill, asserting he received crucial information about Zondacrypto only *after* exercising his veto power.

President Nawrocki Stands Firm on Veto

Karol Nawrocki stated he does not regret vetoing the cryptocurrency legislation, emphasizing that approximately 30,000 individuals affected by issues with Zondacrypto are victims of the current government’s failings, according to Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Nawrocki claims he only received information regarding Zondacrypto from Polish intelligence agencies after initially vetoing the bill, and believes the proposed law would not have addressed the current problems with the firm.

Government’s Delayed Response

The President asserted the government had ample time to address the situation surrounding Zondacrypto, having eleven months to implement European Union regulations. He stated that Polish authorities – the National Revenue Administration, the prosecutor’s office, and other relevant agencies – could have resolved the issue during that period.

Nawrocki criticized the government’s handling of information, noting he was “cut off from information” regarding the situation and only received relevant documents after making his initial decision, highlighting a systemic issue in the government’s operations.

Proposed Alternative Solutions

President Nawrocki argued the government’s approach of attempting to eliminate the entire cryptocurrency market is misguided, potentially harming legitimate businesses alongside fraudulent ones. He defended his veto as a rejection of this approach.

He further stated that he, along with Donald Tusk’s coalition partners, identified necessary changes to the bill and proposed alternative solutions.

Political Motivations Questioned

Nawrocki expressed concern that the government’s actions are driven by political motivations rather than a genuine desire to regulate the cryptocurrency system and protect citizens. He believes the situation is being exploited to fuel political conflict.

No Ties to Zondacrypto

The President firmly denied any personal connection to Przemysław Kral, the head of Zondacrypto, stating he has never met him or any of his representatives. He also confirmed that Zondacrypto did not provide any financial support for his campaign.

Regarding potential links between the right-wing political parties and the company, Nawrocki indicated that the information on his desk revealed only “isolated individuals,” not a widespread connection.

Criticism of Government-Presidential Cooperation

Nawrocki criticized the model of cooperation between the government and the Presidential Palace, stating he has been shielded from crucial information on multiple occasions. He believes the Zondacrypto case demonstrates a weakness in the state’s ability to respond to threats promptly, rather than a flaw in his veto.

Internal Dynamics within PiS

Mateusz Morawiecki has established the “Rozwój Plus” association, attracting MPs and asserting his commitment to the success of PiS, while positioning himself towards the center, according to an analysis by Agata Kondzińska.
