A new NBC News DecisionDesk poll reveals President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have fallen to a record low, with two-thirds of Americans believing the country is heading in the wrong direction.
Economic Concerns Dominate
The economy remains the primary concern for 29% of respondents, surpassing threats to democracy (24%), healthcare (12%), and crime (10%). Inflation and rising living costs are the biggest worries, cited by 45% of those surveyed.
A substantial 68% disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy, with over half expressing “strong disapproval.”
Declining Confidence in Economic Policy
Overall negative assessments of the president’s economic policies have increased by 7 percentage points compared to last summer. This decline in confidence is also evident among Republican voters, with support for the administration’s anti-inflationary measures down by 10 percentage points.
Personal Financial Situation Worsens
Four in ten Americans believe their financial situation is worse than it was a year ago, with significant partisan differences. 55% of Democrats and 46% of independents report a decline, while 34% of Republicans believe their situation has improved. Rising gasoline prices are also a concern, particularly for blue-collar workers and those with basic or secondary education.
Iran Conflict Remains Divisive
Assessments of the president’s handling of the conflict with Iran remain stable despite the announced ceasefire on April 7th. Approximately one-third of respondents support his actions, with a clear polarization: nearly all Democrats and most independents oppose, while 74% of Republicans approve.
A majority (61%) of Americans oppose further military escalation, with this sentiment reaching 74% among those under 30 years of age.
Immigration and Voting Regulations
The poll also indicates mixed views on immigration policy, with 44% approval—a slight improvement from the beginning of the year, though most remain critical. Support for stricter voting regulations is growing, with three-quarters of respondents favoring mandatory photo identification and a majority also supporting citizenship confirmation requirements.
