Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced a “Great March of Patriots” to be held on June 4, 2027, in Warsaw, aiming to honor Tadeusz Mazowiecki with a monument before the next parliamentary elections.
Tusk’s Proposal for a Monument
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the initiative in a video shared on X, commemorating the end of communism in Poland on June 4, 1989, and the subsequent government of Tadeusz Mazowiecki.
Tusk proposed erecting a monument to Mazowiecki in front of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, suggesting a Great March of Patriots to take place at that location on June 4, 2027.
Political Context and Coordination
The planned march is set for a few months before the parliamentary elections scheduled for next autumn. A similar event was held in Warsaw last May, shortly before the presidential election featuring Rafał Trzaskowski.
Tusk invited all former prime ministers, including Jarosław Kaczyński and Mateusz Morawiecki, to join the honorary committee for the monument’s construction.
Historical Significance of June 1989
June 4 marks 37 years since the elections that led to the collapse of the Polish People’s Republic, following the Round Table Agreement between the authorities, the Solidarity opposition, and the Catholic Church.
In the first round, Solidarity secured a near-total victory in the Senate and nearly every available seat in the Sejm. Following a decree change by the Council of State, a second round on June 18, 1989, allowed Solidarity to claim the remaining mandates.
