Iranian naval forces seized two ships attempting to leave the Strait of Hormuz without permission on Wednesday, April 22nd, raising regional tensions.
Incident in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy identified two vessels “violating regulations” on Wednesday morning.
The agency stated the ships attempted to secretly leave the Strait of Hormuz without authorization, repeatedly violating protocols, manipulating navigational systems, and endangering maritime security. The vessels have been transferred to Iranian territorial waters for cargo and document inspection.
The IRGC Navy emphasized that any actions disrupting regulations in the Strait of Hormuz or endangering its safe passage will face a firm and lawful response.
Reports of Firing on Container Ships
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) previously reported an incident 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman, where a container ship captain reported being approached and fired upon by an IRGC vessel, causing significant bridge damage. Tasnim reported the container ship ignored warnings from Iranian armed forces.
Another incident was reported 8 nautical miles west of Iran, where a departing cargo ship captain reported being shot at. The crew is safe, and no damage to the ship was reported. Reuters reported unofficially that a third container ship was fired upon in the same area, flying the Liberian flag, with no casualties.
Trump Extends Truce, Iran Remains Silent
U.S. President Donald Trump announced an extension of the truce with Iran on Tuesday evening, pending a new proposal from Tehran to end the conflict. Iran has not responded to the decision, and the status of potential talks remains unclear, though fighting remains paused.
Restrictions on Maritime Traffic Continue
Iran continues to block the exit of ships from the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, hindering the export of resources from other regional countries. Simultaneously, U.S. forces are detaining ships heading to Iranian ports, preventing the export of Iranian oil and gas.
Both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the April 7th truce. Trump accuses Iran of violating the agreement by not opening the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran claims the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports is a breach of the truce terms.
