Truck with Crane Gets Stuck in Polish Tunnel

A truck-mounted crane became wedged in a tunnel under railway tracks in Warsaw on April 23rd, causing significant traffic disruption.

Tunnel Collision and Damage

A truck with an HDS crane became stuck in a tunnel located under the PKP railway tracks on Aleja 4 Czerwca 1989 after its crane arm struck the tunnel ceiling.

The impact caused substantial damage to the tunnel structure, the crane itself, and the truck. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 23rd, before noon, on the section of Aleja 4 Czerwca 1989 between Lazurowa and Aleje Jerozolimskie.

Cause of the Incident

Preliminary investigations suggest the driver likely failed to properly secure the crane arm. This resulted in a forceful collision with the tunnel ceiling during transit.

The tunnel wall, the crane mounted on the vehicle, and the truck itself all sustained damage.

Rescue Operation and Traffic Disruption

The truck’s momentum carried it deeper into the tunnel, where it became wedged. Police were dispatched to the scene and temporarily closed the passage, securing the area.

Priority was given to preventing the damaged crane arm from detaching and falling onto the roadway. The truck driver lowered the vehicle’s height by releasing pressure from the hydraulic system, allowing the truck to be freed.

The truck slowly exited the tunnel and stopped before the intersection with Traktorzystów Street, blocking two lanes of traffic. A traffic jam extended to Chrościckiego Street.

Police Response and Investigation

Police secured the damaged vehicle, the tunnel area, and surrounding lanes. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway.
