Shots fired at a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington D.C. on Saturday evening could politically benefit President Trump, according to experts.
Shooting at White House Correspondents’ Dinner
A shooting occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Hilton hotel in Washington D.C. on Saturday evening. President Trump and members of his cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, were present, along with prominent journalists and politicians.
Guests at the event hid under tables in the ballroom as the incident unfolded. The suspect opened fire in the hotel lobby and was apprehended by authorities.
Suspect and Charges
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, was armed with a shotgun, pistol, and multiple knives. He is registered as an independent voter.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen will face two charges: use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Trump’s Potential Political Benefit
According to Americanist Professor Tomasz Płudowski, the attack could provide political advantages to President Trump, as people tend to sympathize with victims. He noted a similar situation occurred during Trump’s presidential campaign in July 2024.
Płudowski emphasized that such attacks often benefit the perceived victim, as people identify with and feel compassion for them. He believes this incident could strengthen Trump’s position.
Motives and Security Concerns
The motives of the perpetrator are currently unclear, potentially stemming from political opposition or mental health issues, according to Płudowski. He suggested that such actions are often carried out by individuals with problems or strongly opposed political views.
Płudowski also noted the swift and effective response of security services, stating the situation did not pose an immediate threat to life. However, he criticized the security for failing to adequately secure exit routes and prevent weapons from being brought into the hall.
Instinctive Assessment of Suspect’s Ideology
Płudowski added, “Instinctively, I feel that this is not a person with conservative views.”
