Earthquake in Afghanistan: At Least 2,200 Dead, 3,600 Injured

A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck northeast Afghanistan, claiming over 2,200 lives and injuring more than 3,600 people, with the death toll expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Death Toll and Injuries:

Afghan authorities reported over 2,200 deaths and approximately 3,600 injuries resulting from the earthquake that devastated the country.

Impact on Kunar Province:

The most significant damage was suffered in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, where provincial official Ijas Ulhak Jaad described the destructive power as “something we have never experienced before.” He recounted that three major villages in the Nurgal district were completely destroyed, with women and children crying out in despair.

Humanitarian Crisis Background:

Afghanistan frequently experiences earthquakes, often causing significant damage due to the poor construction of many residential buildings. The country is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, compounded by political instability following the August 2021 Taliban takeover and the subsequent withdrawal of American forces. This has led to a significant reduction in Western aid to Afghanistan.
