Austrian authorities have arrested a suspect after rat poison was discovered in jars of baby food, prompting recalls in multiple countries.
HiPP Addresses the Situation
HiPP stated they are pleased with the progress of the investigation and will provide updates as confirmed information becomes available.
Contaminated Jars and Recalls
Police believe the baby food containers were not tampered with during production. Six jars containing the poison have been identified, with five safely removed from shelves in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The sixth jar’s location is currently unknown but believed to be in Austria, and authorities have released guidance for identifying potentially contaminated products.
HiPP Maintains Production Integrity
HiPP insists its production processes remain fully intact and unaffected.
Initial Recall of Carrot and Potato Puree
In mid-April, HiPP initiated a recall of “HiPP Carrot and Potato” baby food (for infants 5+ months) from Austrian stores, stating a foreign substance may have been introduced. Customers were advised to return the product for a refund.
Extortion Attempt Alleged
HiPP claims to be the victim of an extortion attempt in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, characterizing it as an external act of manipulation rather than a quality defect.
Demand for Payment
Austrian media reports that HiPP received an email in March demanding a 2 million euro payment within six days. The company claims it didn’t notice the email until two weeks after the deadline, noting the email was sent to a group address checked every 2-3 weeks.
Health Warning Issued
Austria’s Agency for Health and Food Safety has urged parents whose infants consumed HiPP products to seek medical attention if they observe symptoms such as extreme weakness, paleness, or bleeding.
