Human Remains Found in Brush; Identity Sought

Human skeletal remains, including a skull, were discovered in Połaniec, Poland, prompting a police investigation to determine the victim’s identity.

Discovery in Połaniec

Police received a report of human remains – bones and a skull – found in brushland in Połaniec. Senior Sergeant Joanna Szczepaniak of the Staszów County Police Headquarters confirmed the report, as cited by Radio Kielce.

Initial findings suggest the remains may have been there for several years. Fragments of clothing, including glasses, indicate the victim may have been a woman. DNA testing will be necessary.

Similar Cases Under Investigation

Investigators are also reviewing missing persons reports. A similar discovery occurred in Szczecinek, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in early April, where a human skull was found on a construction site, later joined by other bone fragments, clothing, and a pacemaker.

Prosecutor Ewa Dziadczyk of the Koszalin District Prosecutor’s Office stated the remains have been sent for identification, with DNA to be compared to a profile of a person missing for several years.

Unidentified Remains in Łódź

In late October 2024, the body of a woman was discovered in a building on Wojska Polskiego Street in Łódź. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition.

The woman was estimated to be around 40 years old and had likely been deceased for several months. Despite efforts, her identity remains unknown, prompting investigators to seek public assistance in February.

Ongoing Efforts to Identify Victims

Prosecutor Paweł Jasiak of the Łódź District Prosecutor’s Office reported in late March that three tips had been received, but none had been definitively confirmed or ruled out. Police’s own findings are also being verified.

Decades-Old Cold Case

In January, the Sieradz District Prosecutor’s Office appealed for help identifying a man whose body was found on July 7, 1993, in Lubola, Pęczniew commune. He was wearing only underwear and a sock.

Initial investigations suggested a blunt force trauma to the skull. An autopsy confirmed the victim was a man approximately 40 years old and 182 cm tall, and had been deceased and hidden for at least several months due to the advanced state of decomposition.
