Polish political figure Andrzej Olechowski was honored at a funeral in Warsaw, attended by prominent leaders including Prime Minister Donald Tusk and former President Bronisław Komorowski.
A Legacy of Patriotism and Integration
During the service at St. Anne’s Church in Wilanów, Marcin Olechowski described his father as a convinced patriot, European, and transatlanticist. He noted that the work his father began by introducing rock ‘n’ roll with Wojtek Mann continued through his tireless efforts to integrate Poland into Western institutional structures.
Notable Political Figures in Attendance
The funeral was attended by family, friends, and numerous politicians, mainly from the Civic Coalition. Present were Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Jan Grabiec, Tomasz Siemoniak, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Grzegorz Schetyna, and former President Bronisław Komorowski.
Political Career and EU Accession
Andrzej Olechowski served as Minister of Finance in 1992 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1995. In April 1994, he submitted the official application for Poland to join the European Union.
He was also one of the “three tenors”—alongside Maciej Płażyński and Donald Tusk—who founded Civic Platform in 2001, and he ran for president in 2000 and 2010.
Final Resting Place
Following the mass, the funeral procession went to Wilanów Cemetery, where the urn containing his ashes was placed in the family grave.
