Massive Forest Fire Engulfs Puszcza Solska; Pilot Killed in Aerial Operation

Massive forest fires have engulfed approximately 500 hectares of the Puszcza Solska forest in Poland, prompting a large-scale aerial and ground response that tragically claimed the life of a pilot.

Uncontrolled Fires in Puszcza Solska

A major firefighting operation is underway in Puszcza Solska, where fire has already consumed approximately 500 hectares of forest. Over 100 firefighting units, including Dromader aircraft and helicopters, are deployed to combat the blaze, which remains uncontrolled.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 5, in the Biłgoraj district. The affected area includes high-value environmental zones such as nature reserves, landscape parks, and Natura 2000 sites.

Aerial Operations and Tragic Accident

Warsaw firefighters from the JRG 7 Specialized High-Altitude Rescue Group are assisting the operation, utilizing helicopters equipped with Bambi Buckets to reach inaccessible terrain. The mission faces significant difficulties due to dense smoke and shifting winds.

Tragically, a Warsaw-based Dromader aircraft crashed during the operation, resulting in the immediate death of the pilot. The aircraft was being used for rapid water drops to limit the fire’s spread.

Resource Deployment and Current Status

The emergency response includes six Dromader aircraft, six firefighting helicopters, and two police and fire Black Hawks. Additionally, a logistics platoon from JRG 17 has arrived to support long-term operations, managing supplies and equipment for the extended deployment.

The fight to contain the fire continues as authorities work to protect remaining parts of the forest complex. Currently, two firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation.
