Despite its name, Poland’s Large Family Card offers significant benefits to parents of one or two children under specific regulatory exceptions regarding past family size and legal residency.
Eligibility and Resident Requirements
The Large Family Card (KDR) is a program providing discounts and relief in both public institutions and at private partners. Eligibility extends beyond Polish citizens to include certain groups of foreigners and EU or EFTA citizens living legally in Poland.
While the card is primarily intended for families raising at least three children, the regulations allow for several exceptions. The benefit applies to members of large families, defined as those where parents are raising or have raised at least three children, regardless of their current ages.
Continuity of Rights and Exceptions
Since 2019, the group of eligible persons has expanded, meaning many seniors or parents currently raising only one or two children can still utilize the KDR. A key provision is that the death of a child does not cause the loss of the right to the card.
If parents had three children and one passed away due to illness or an accident, they retain their right to the Large Family Card even if they currently raise fewer children or no longer have dependents.
Applications can be submitted without leaving home. The application must include all eligible family members; if a child has died, this must be accounted for in the request.
Expanded Social and Professional Benefits for 2026
In 2026, the KDR evolves from a discount program into a tool for social support and professional activation. Beneficiaries will receive an extended unemployment benefit period of up to 365 days, compared to the standard 180 days.
Large families will also receive priority access to vocational training and priority support from career advisors to assist with job matching and returning to the labor market.
Unemployment Benefits and Card Costs
Unemployment benefit amounts for KDR holders are determined by the length of their social security contribution history. For those with up to 5 years of seniority, the rate is 1,377.60 PLN gross (1,253.62 PLN net) for the first 3 months, and 1,081.80 PLN gross (984.44 PLN net) thereafter.
For 5 to 20 years of seniority, the rate is 1,721.90 PLN gross (1,566.93 PLN net) for 3 months, then 1,352.20 PLN gross (1,230.50 PLN net). For over 20 years, the rate is 2,066.30 PLN gross (1,880.33 PLN net) initially, then 1,622.70 PLN gross (1,476.66 PLN net).
Users can utilize a traditional plastic card or a mobile app version. If a user initially selects the digital version and later decides to order a physical plastic card, a fee of 10 PLN applies.
