A collision between a van and a semi-truck on the S8 near Żabia Wola resulted in one fatality and one severe injury on Wednesday morning, forcing a total closure of the highway.
Collision Details and Emergency Response
The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 3, at 10:04 a.m. at the 426.7-kilometer mark of the S8 expressway near Żabia Wola in the Grodzisk Mazowiecki district. A van struck the rear of a semi-truck trailer, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Six fire service units, including four from PSP Grodzisk Mazowiecki and two volunteer fire departments from Żelechów and Skuły, were dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue operations.
Victims and Rescue Operations
The vehicles involved carried three people in total. Two men trapped in the van required urgent extraction; the first man was evacuated while unconscious and, despite resuscitation efforts, could not be revived.
The second man, who was heavily pinned in the wreckage, required hydraulic tools to access. Following his extraction, he was transported by an Air Ambulance to a hospital with generalized bodily injuries.
Traffic Disruption and Site Status
The S8 highway toward Warsaw remains completely closed while police carry out their investigation. The lane heading toward Katowice was temporarily shut twice to facilitate the landing and departure of the medical helicopter.
Authorities confirmed that neither vehicle was transporting hazardous materials; the truck was carrying plastic granules, while the van was loaded with furniture. Currently, two volunteer fire units and the police remain on-site.
