Palestine Appeals to US After Western Countries Recognize Statehood

The foreign ministry of Palestine has called on the US to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state after Britain, Canada, and Australia have made similar moves.

Western Countries’ Stance

Britain, Canada, and Australia have recognized Palestine as a sovereign state. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that this move aims to rescue hopes for peace and emphasized that the only future is a two-state solution.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced that Canada recognizes the Palestinian state and offers support in establishing a peaceful future for Palestine and Israel.

Palestinian Reaction

Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin welcomed the decisions, saying they bring Palestine closer to sovereignty and independence. The Palestinian foreign ministry described the moves as “bold and in line with international law.”

The ministry called on countries that have not yet recognized Palestine, particularly the US, to initiate such recognition and adhere to international law.

Israeli Response

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed dissatisfaction with the moves, stating that recognizing a Palestinian state after the October 7 massacre would be a significant reward for terrorism.

Netanyahu asserted that a Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River and that Israel will react to further recognitions by other countries.
