Anna Maria Żukowska Defends Mileage Reimbursements Amid Scrutiny

Left-wing MP Anna Maria Żukowska has dismissed claims regarding her high mileage reimbursements as unreliable, explaining that her duties as the sole Left representative in the Mazovian region necessitate extensive travel.

Mileage Claims Under Investigation

A report by “Fakt” revealed that Anna Maria Żukowska received over 38,000 PLN in mileage reimbursements, averaging 90 kilometers per day. The report highlighted that the distance between her constituency office and the Sejm is only 1.7 kilometers.

Parliamentarians receive a monthly lump sum for office operations, which in the previous year totaled 23,300 PLN. This fund covers rent, utilities, and staff salaries, while MPs may also claim mileage for parliamentary duties and taxi fares, despite free public transport access in Warsaw.

Żukowska’s Defense of Travel Expenses

Responding to the reports, Żukowska labeled the information “unreliable.” She noted that she manages seven constituency offices as the only Left-wing MP in the Mazovia region. She emphasized that a parliamentary mandate extends beyond one’s home district to the entire country.

Among Warsaw-based MPs, Żukowska ranks third in mileage reimbursements, following Piotr Kandyba of the Civic Coalition and Piotr Uściński of Law and Justice.

Clarification on Vehicle Usage

Żukowska addressed claims regarding her vehicle ownership, confirming she had a personal car in 2025 and utilized a leased vehicle throughout 2024. She explained that she did not include the lease agreement in her initial filing because the costs were below the required reporting threshold.

Effective from 2026, new regulations will cap mileage reimbursements for private vehicle use within a constituency to 1,500 kilometers per month. Travel outside the district will require a detailed registry of dates and routes.
