Australian Tourist Detained in Tatra Mountains After Illegal Quad Ride

On May 26, police in Kościelisko arrested a 26-year-old Australian national for operating an unregistered quad bike without a valid driver’s license, leading to swift legal consequences and a stern warning from authorities.

Illegal Quad Operation in Kościelisko

The incident occurred on the morning of May 26 on Salamandra Street. Police officers observed three mud-covered quad bikes being driven erratically. Upon inspection, it was discovered that a 26-year-old Australian tourist was operating one of the vehicles, registered as an agricultural tractor, despite having no legal authorization to drive.

Following his arrest, the man was taken into custody and held in a detention facility. He was processed through an expedited court procedure, resulting in a fine, a six-month ban on driving in Poland, and an order to cover court costs. The driver of a second quad was fined for the poor technical condition of his vehicle.

Increased Enforcement Against Tourists

This incident follows a previous controversy involving a Ukrainian influencer who drove a Corvette over eight kilometers into the restricted area of the Tatra National Park near Morskie Oko. That individual received a 100 PLN fine after misleading officers but was subsequently banned from entering Poland and the Schengen Area for five years.

Zakopane police have issued a stern warning that both marked and unmarked units are monitoring for law violations. Authorities emphasized that they will continue to respond decisively to any future incidents of illegal behavior in the region.

Safety Warnings and Park Regulations

The Tatra National Park reports lingering snow patches on northern slopes and steep gullies, posing significant slip hazards. Trails in lower sections remain muddy, and fallen trees currently obstruct the green trail between Równia Waksmundzka and Hala Gąsienicowa.

Park officials remind visitors to check weather forecasts, avoid hiking alone, and ensure proper equipment. Additionally, the park mandates strict adherence to trail rules, including a ban on night hiking until November 30 and requirements to stay on marked paths and refrain from littering or polluting mountain water sources.
