The bodies of a man and woman, aged approximately 30-35, were discovered in a Lithuanian forest near the Polish border, lacking identification.
Bodies Discovered, Migrant Group Detained
The bodies of a woman and a man, estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old, were found early Thursday morning in a forest in the Rūkštenai village, in the Vilkaviškis region of western Lithuania. Local residents alerted authorities to the discovery.
No visible signs of violence were observed on the bodies, and they were not carrying any identification documents.
Illegal Entry Attempts and Secondary Migration
One woman and seven men were detained at the scene, having entered Lithuania illegally and also lacking identification or passports. They claimed to be citizens of Ethiopia, Algeria, Yemen, and Eritrea.
Two individuals were transported to a hospital for medical examinations. Authorities believe the group arrived in Lithuania from Latvia and the incident may be linked to increased secondary migration from that country.
The group reportedly intended to cross the border into Poland, where transportation was awaiting them.
Lithuanian Border Security Efforts
Lithuania’s Border Guard reported that they prevented 705 migrants from entering the country through unauthorized points this year.
Since August 3, 2021, when border guards were authorized to turn back migrants attempting to cross the Belarusian border in unauthorized locations, 8,106 individuals have been denied entry. In total, Lithuanian border guards have prevented 25,329 illegal entries since the start of the migration crisis triggered by Belarus.
Polish Border Guard Interceptions
In late April, the Polish Border Guard announced the detention of four individuals after they illegally crossed the Poland-Lithuania border.
Three Pakistani citizens and one Afghan national crossed the border on foot in an unauthorized location and were returned to Lithuania under a simplified readmission procedure. The Podlaski Border Guard Branch has returned 178 individuals to Lithuania via readmission since the beginning of 2026.
The previous day, Polish border guards detained a “courier” near the Poland-Lithuania border who was transporting six Somali citizens who had illegally crossed from Lithuania into Poland.
